Trusted Housesitters Honest Review: How It Made Me A Solo Female World Traveler
I still remember the exact moment everything changed. I had just graduated from college, and like most new grads, I wasn’t completely sure where I wanted my life to go.
But one thing was crystal clear: I wanted to travel.
So I did what any confused twenty-something would do. I googled “how to travel cheaply on a budget.”
The results flooded in—teaching English abroad, work exchange programs, backpacking hostels, WWOOFing on farms, becoming an au pair. I clicked through dozens of tabs, trying to figure out which option felt right for me.
Then I stumbled across a YouTube video with a bold claim: “I Found the Best Travel Hack in the World.” Interested – I clicked.

The Discovery That Started It All
The woman in the video shared something I’d never heard of before.
She talked about a platform that let her stay in beautiful, luxurious homes completely free. We’re talking about gorgeous houses with full kitchens, comfortable beds, and amazing amenities. Some stays were just for a weekend. Others lasted for months.
And the best part? It was all free.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. There had to be a catch, right?
Well, there was one thing. You had to take care of the homeowner’s pets while they were away. Usually dogs, sometimes cats, occasionally other animals. But having grown up with dogs my whole life, this didn’t feel like a catch at all. It felt like a bonus.
That day, I made a promise to myself. One day, I was going to do this. I didn’t know exactly when or how. But I knew I wanted to.
Now, I get to share my Trusted Housesitters Honest Review with you!
What Is Trusted Housesitters?
Trusted Housesitters is a platform that connects homeowners with responsible house sitters. Homeowners need someone to watch their home and care for their pets while they’re traveling. House sitters get to stay in beautiful homes around the world for free.
It’s a win-win situation. The homeowners get peace of mind knowing their pets are loved and cared for in their own home. And travelers like you and me get free accommodation in places we might never have been able to afford otherwise.
The platform works in countries all over the world. You can find house sits in the United States, England, France, Australia, New Zealand, and so many more locations.

Taking the First Step
After discovering Trusted Housesitters, I knew what I needed to do first: get a remote job.
That way, I could travel and still make money. It was the perfect plan.
Two months after graduating, I landed my first remote role. I was thrilled! I could finally take the next step and start using the platform to travel while working.
But here’s the thing. It took me a whole year before I actually booked my first house sit.
Why I Waited (And Why You Might Too)
If you’re reading this and thinking about trying Trusted Housesitters, you might feel some fear. I definitely did.
Back when I started, there wasn’t much information online about the platform.
I was scared about staying in a stranger’s home, in a place I’d never been, where I didn’t know anyone nearby.
It honestly felt like the beginning of a scary movie. And I definitely didn’t want to star in that film.
For months, I let fear hold me back. I worried about all the things that could go wrong. My family and friends shared their concerns too, which made my doubts even stronger.
But slowly, I started building my confidence. I took solo trips close to home. I went on solo dates in my own city.
Little by little, I proved to myself that I could handle being alone in new situations.
Eventually, something shifted.
The fear of never trying became bigger than the fear of trying. I realized I had to find out for myself whether this platform was real or just too good to be true.

My First House Sit
I decided to play it safe with my first house sit. I chose a location only 45 minutes from my home in Delray Beach, Florida. That way, if anything went wrong, I could easily drive home.
Though I’m not going to lie, the way my mom and I said goodbye to each other that day was as if we both thought it was going to be the last from the fear of what could go wrong.
It was just a weekend stay. The area was nice, the home was comfortable, and the dog and cat were so sweet.
And you know what? It was wonderful.
The homeowners loved having me. They even invited me back the following weekend. After those two stays, I had two glowing reviews on my profile.
How the Rating System Works
Just like Uber or Airbnb, Trusted Housesitters uses a rating system. After each stay, homeowners can leave you a review. And you can leave a review for them too.
These reviews are super important. They help build trust on the platform. When homeowners see that you have good reviews, they feel more comfortable inviting you into their home.
With my two positive reviews, I felt ready to venture outside of Florida. I had built a solid foundation.
It was time to explore.
Adventures Across America
From there, my travels took off. I house sat in Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and California.
Each home was amazing and beautiful. Each pet was sweet and loving.
And honestly? As a solo traveler, having animal companions meant the world to me. Coming home to a wagging tail or a purring cat made me feel so much less alone. They gave me comfort at the end of long days exploring new cities.
How to Choose the Right House Sit
One of the best things about Trusted Housesitters is that you get to choose which houses you apply to. Before you apply, you can see all the responsibilities for that particular sit.
Some homeowners have very specific routines they want you to follow. This might include:
- Waking up early to walk the dog
- Training a puppy
- Giving medication to an older pet
- Following a strict feeding schedule
- Maintaining the garden
Other homeowners are much more relaxed. They just want you to keep their pet company, make sure they’re fed and watered, and enjoy their home.
You get to decide what works for you. If you’re not a morning person, you probably don’t want a house sit that requires 6 AM walks. If you love active dogs, a house sit with a playful puppy might be perfect.
What You Actually Get
Let me be very clear about the perks of house sitting. These aren’t just okay places to crash. I’m talking about real luxury amenities:
- Fully equipped kitchens where you can cook your own meals and save money on restaurants
- Comfortable beds, often king-sized, with quality bedding
- Access to gyms, pools, or hot tubs
- Fast WiFi for working remotely
- Free cars that you can use during your stay to explore the area
- Laundry facilities so you can pack light
Think about how much money you’d spend on a hotel or Airbnb with all these features. It would cost hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars.
With Trusted Housesitters, you pay nothing for accommodation.
Expanding My Comfort Zone
That YouTube video I watched? That was four years ago now. And I can honestly say it changed my life.
Trusted Housesitters helped me build confidence to travel far from home. It pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way possible.
Eventually, I felt brave enough to travel outside the country by myself. It helped me build my confidence to travel to over 10 countries spanning four countries in one year. And one of them was even a house sit I did in England – outside of the countless ones I have done in the U.S.
When Things Get Complicated
Here’s a real-life example of how valuable this platform can be. I was traveling abroad and found myself with very limited housing options. The situation was stressful. Hotels were expensive. Airbnbs were booked up.
But I was able to secure a beautiful home near London for an entire month through Trusted Housesitters. It saved my trip. It gave me a comfortable, safe place to stay during an uncertain time.

Discovering Places You Never Planned to Visit
One unexpected benefit of Trusted Housesitters is that it pushes you to explore places you might never have considered.
Visiting Austin, Texas was never really on my radar. But then a beautiful home popped up with a three adorable dogs, and so I decided to apply. Before I knew it, I’m discovering that Austin has some of the best food I’ve ever tasted in any American city.
The platform opens doors to experiences I wouldn’t have planned to do on my own. It encourages you to be spontaneous and adventurous.
The Honest Downsides
I want to be completely transparent with you. Trusted Housesitters isn’t perfect for everyone or every situation.
You need flexibility. You’re working around the homeowner’s schedule, not your own. If they need someone from March 10-20, and you want to travel March 15-25, it won’t work.
You have real responsibilities. This isn’t a vacation where you can disappear all day. Pets need care, attention, and routine. You have to be reliable and responsible.
Despite how much I love traveling and exploring the new city I am in, the house and especially pets are alwasy my number one priority.
If they need to be fed right at 8:00 PM, I’m going to make sure I’m back before their dinner time. Their bowl needs to be washed every day and food needs to be measured on a scale for each meal?
You bet. Do the homeowners have any idea that I am following thier instructions?
No. But, they trust me enough to let me into their homes and look after members of thier family. I don’t take that for granted and honor it highly.
Competition can be tough. Popular locations like Paris get lots of applications. When you’re starting out with no reviews, it can be hard to get accepted.
It requires a membership fee. You’ll need to pay for an annual subscription to access the platform. It’s not a huge amount, but it’s something to factor in. However, one night in an Airbnb essentially is equal to the yearly membership fee. So, for me? It’s definitely worth it no doubt.
You need to be comfortable with pets. If you’re allergic to dogs or cats, or if you’re scared of animals, this platform won’t work for you.
Why I’m Not Currently Using the Platform
Here’s my honest truth. I’m not currently active on Trusted Housesitters. The reason? I no longer have a remote job.
Since house sitting requires you to be present at the home for most of the day (because of pet care responsibilities), it only really works if you can work from anywhere or if you’re between jobs.
But would I sign up again in a heartbeat if I got another remote role?
Absolutely. Without question.
Why I Still Recommend It
Even though I’m not currently using Trusted Housesitters, this platform holds a special place in my heart. I recommend it to all my friends and family who love to travel.
I especially recommend it for solo female travelers looking for more comfort and elevated stays, as you can read about here – Luxury Solo Female Travel Budget: How to Afford it on Any Budget.
Trusted Housesitters gave me the ability to explore the world in a budget-friendly way while still enjoying luxury amenities.
It taught me that I’m braver than I thought. It showed me that strangers can be incredibly kind and trusting.
Most importantly, it proved that there are creative ways to make your travel dreams come true, even when money is tight.
Tips for First-Time House Sitters
If you’re thinking about trying Trusted Housesitters, here’s my advice:
Start close to home. Your first house sit should be somewhere you can easily get to if you need to leave. This builds your confidence and gives you a safety net.
Create a detailed profile. Share photos of yourself with animals. Write about your experience with pets. Explain why you’d be a great house sitter.
Apply to multiple sits. Don’t just apply to one and wait. Cast a wide net, especially when you’re starting out.
Be responsive and professional. When homeowners message me, I reply quickly and politely. I treat it like a job interview, because in a way, it is.
Read the listing carefully. Make sure you understand all the responsibilities before you apply. Don’t commit to something you can’t handle.
Video calls are your friend. Before agreeing to a house sit, I always ask for a video call with the homeowner. This helps us both feel more comfortable.
Is Trusted Housesitters Right for You?
Trusted Housesitters might be perfect for you if:
- You love animals
- You want to travel on a budget
- You work remotely or have flexible time off
- You’re responsible and reliable
- You enjoy having a “home base” while traveling instead of constantly moving around
It might not be the best fit if:
- You’re allergic to pets or uncomfortable around animals
- You want complete freedom with zero responsibilities
- You prefer hotels with daily housekeeping and room service
- You need to stick to exact dates that can’t be flexible
- You want to be out exploring from dawn until late at night every single day
My Final Thoughts
Was I biased in my Trusted Housesitters Honest Review? Maybe a little. But I tried to share both the amazing parts and the challenges of using Trusted Housesitters.
For me, this platform was life-changing. It gave a recent college grad with big travel dreams and a small budget the chance to explore the world. It helped me grow as a person and as a solo traveler.

Could it change your life too? I honestly think it might.
If you’re curious, my advice is simple: take the leap. Start with one house sit close to home. See how it feels. You might discover, like I did, that the fear of never trying is scarier than trying and failing.
Four years ago, I watched a YouTube video that promised the best travel hack in the world. I’m here to tell you: for me, it absolutely delivered on that promise.
